SEVERE THUNDERSTORM OUTLOOK

A front is forecast to gradually move southwards across Northland overnight Saturday and become slow moving over Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula during Sunday.

There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms embedded within the associated frontal rainband during this time about eastern Northland and northern parts of Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula, including Great Barrier Island. Any thunderstorms that occur are likely to bring localised heavy rain of 15 to 25mm/hr.

There is also a low risk of thunderstorms over remaining parts of Northland,Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula, as indicated on the chart.

No thunderstorms or significant convection expected elsewhere.

The front mentioned above is forecast to slowly cross Auckland during the afternoon and evening and persist over Coromandel Peninsula into the night. Some heavy rainfalls are expected during this time and a Severe Weather Watch is in force for these areas. There is also a low risk of thunderstorms embedded in the associated rainband over Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula during this time.If any thunderstorms occur they are likely to boost localised rainfall rates.

To the north of this front, over Northland and northern Auckland, a combination of afternoon heating and low level wind convergences are expected to produce scattered showers. Some of these showers are likely to be heavy, with a moderate risk of isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening. Any thunderstorms forming here are likely to produce localised heavy rain with intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr.
